Otto Hightower avaThis post is dedicated to the stage costume of Otto Hightower worn in the expected series House of the Dragon, which will be the prequel to Game of Thrones. For now, we have only one image of Otto’s outfit from HBO promotional pictures, so we don’t actually know much about his other movie costumes. And even this one is visible only above the waist. But still, we can discuss what we see and our theories about this character’s future costumes.

House of the Dragon is a prequel series to Game of Thrones and is based on George R.R. Martin's 2018 novel Fire & Blood, set to be released in 2022.

This time, we will analyze the show costume of Otto Hightower played by Welsh actor Rhys Ifans, with costume design by Jany Temime.

Ser Otto Hightower was a knight from House Hightower. According to Fire & Blood, he was considered a man of great learning in his time, but Otto was also haughty, blunt, and domineering. And despite his great knowledge, he is often regarded as a failed Hand to three kings.

According to A Feast for Crows, as one of the most powerful of the noble houses in the Reach, the Hightowers are as rich as House Lannister and among the oldest and proudest of the Great Houses.

The Hightower sigil features a white tower crowned with flames on smoke gray.

The green color associated with the Hightowers derives from the faction of House Targaryen and their loyalists, often referred to as the “queen's party”, who supported the ascent of Alicent Hightower's son Aegon II as King of the Seven Kingdoms.

While the ages of some of the characters have likely been adjusted for the show, Otto is 54 years old at the time when House of the Dragon begins, the same age as Rhys Ifans.

As far as we know, there is no description of Otto's appearance in the books, although, in some of the official artwork and fan art, Otto has a full beard and sometimes gray hair.

Now, let's look at some of the details on his costume.

The Game of Thrones set the bar regarding the movie costumes very high and we have certain expectations of the prequel HBO series that is happening in the same universe, even if it is 180 years before.

Like Corlys Velaryon, Otto is wearing an outer gown and an undertunic or doublet. We expect to see his wealth on display here. Because we have only the HBO promotional pictures and the image is cropped at the waist, we’re not sure if it's to the knees or the floor.

The silhouette is about the mid-16th century Renaissance.

The outer gown is made from a basket-weave type fabric with a velvet shawl collar, while his undertunic is made from this triglyph or y-shaped motif texture cloth.

We saw a similar fabric used on Arya Stark's jerkin in Season 7 of GOT.

The textures of the costume are nice, including the buttons and loop fasteners, but we would have liked to have seen something more done here. Perhaps some padding or quilting of the overgown to give it some gravitas, or even slashing, or maybe fabric manipulation on the sleeves.

The color of his costume isn't green per se. It's more to the blues in this picture. The Hightowers are likely on the island of Driftmark attending the funeral of Ser Laenor Velaryon. So, their colors might be more subdued.

It's also likely that the designers don't want to paint themselves into a corner, having the greens and the black factions in their exclusive colors. The end result would look a bit too cartoonish.

In earlier seasons of GOT, we did see Cersei Lannister dressed in green, blue, and lavender before she went full-on red and gold. If House of the Dragon is to follow in a similar direction to Game of Thrones, the green will become more intense after the outbreak of a bloody civil war, known as Dance of the Dragons. Otherwise, as Game of Thrones costume designer Michele Clapton has said in the past, the design team will have nowhere else to go.

While we can't see Otto's hands, it's likely he's wearing some rings. We can see, however, his Hand of the King broach, the same style as depicted in Game of Thrones.

At this point, Otto is Hand to his son-in-law King Viserys I Targaryen, the 5th Targaryen king to sit on the Iron Throne.

The broach is worn on his right side in the same manner as Tyrion and Tywin Lannister and Qyburn, Hand to Queen Cersei Lannister.

The exception is Ned Stark, Hand to King Robert Baratheon, and Tyrion serving as Hand of the Queen Daenerys Targaryen, who both wear their brooches on the left side, above their heart.

We can completely buy into that the broach would have sustained the same design 180 years earlier, although according to Fire & Blood, each Hand can design their emblem. Tyrion, for instance, wore a chain of hands on his armor during the Battle of Blackwater Bay instead of a brooch.

The chain was made by Steenson Jewelers in Northern Ireland.

Otto's also wearing a gold chain close to his throat.

In the Middle Ages, noblemen of wealth were just as likely to wear jewelry as noblewomen. There are plenty of 16th-century paintings depicting men wearing gold chains such as this.

In Season 8, Cersei Lannister takes to wearing chains attached to her armor.

Also, a hat would have worked nicely with Otto Hightower’s outfit. We don't expect to see hats, though, because DOPs (directors of photography) tend to not like them – they cast shadows on the actors’ faces.
