Traditional clothing of Ireland

Post by sofiya » Tue Aug 30, 2022 8:08 am

Typical Irish male and female clothing. The woman is wearing a white léine tunic with a heavy gúna dress on top. The man is wearing a typical yellow léine lifted up through a crios (belt) to knee level, a red ionair jacket with typical designs, and a hat/cap known as a bairéad which is the same as a berret.

Special thanks to Proinsias Mag Fhionnghaile for this photo).

Nice illustration of Irish traditional clothing from the mid-16th century. This shows the léine (linen tunic), ionair (very short jacket), and brat (large semi-circular cloak with lots of fringing). The léine was universal in Ireland, more common than a pair of jeans and most if not everybody today has at least one pair of jeans. The léine with men was always yellow. Other clothing items were of many colours and usually very colourful. The centre figure wears a brat and you can see that it covers his whole body.

Traditional clothing of Irish men, women, and children. The woman wears a large brat (large semi circular cloak), a green gúna (heavy dress) underneath, and an apron. The male on the right wears a yellow léine (long linen tunic) and a red ionair (very short jacket) with decoration of blue fringing. The Irish often went barefoot but sometimes also wore shoes. Children in Ireland dressed in mini versions of adult clothing, as you see in this drawing.
